There’s the MJ We All Know and Love!

The Boris Diaw/Raja Bell deal was pretty strange.  It worked out a little too well for the Bobcats, a little too neatly considering they gave up Jason Richardson, who was perceived to be the best player in the trade.  Maybe he had to get the one good trade idea out of his system, because Michael Jordan’s back to making moves that make no sense, dealing Adam Morrison and Shannon Brown to the Lakers for Space Cadet Vlad Radmanovic.

Adam Morrison isn’t too good as an NBA player, but here’s what he’s not: a complete waste of considerable salary for the next three seasons.  Supposing that the Bobcats still hadn’t seen anything out of Morrison that they liked by the end of the season, they could cut him loose by refusing to pick up his team option (of over $5 mil).  Considering how Ammo has started his NBA career, they’d be perfectly justified.  But instead of refusing to pay Morrison $5 million, they just agreed to pay a marginal player over $19 million for the next three seasons.  Vlad will have his games where makes this deal look genius, exploding for 30-something points and playing decent D.  Then he’ll disappear for the rest of the week, shooting 2-23 over three games and drawing comparisons that are insulting to turnstiles everywhere.

The real downer for the ‘Cats just might be losing Shannon Brown.  The headlines will tell you “Morrison for Radmanovic,” but Shannon Brown has actually posted the highest PER of the three this season.  Brown isn’t a fantastic player and he isn’t as consistent as he should be, but he still makes quite a difference on the court.  You may not believe me, but I’m sure the Lakers do; Brown played a key role down the stretch for the Bobcats in the double-overtime victory in L.A..

All in all, Charlotte’s sending a young, struggling prospect (but notably still a prospect) and a nice role player for a veteran who still makes ‘rookie mistakes,’ couldn’t get his head screwed on right to satisfy Phil Jackson (he’s going to love Larry Brown), and tends to disappear.  Oh, and just forget about that $13 million dollars or so you’ll be losing.  You probably didn’t need it anyway.

Ive been watching nba games since 1970.Heres my 12 man alltime worst players in nba history squad. The worst player i ever saw play in the nba was john hummer. Then there were ken charles, quinn buckner, kevin stacom, chuck nevitt, walt hazard, mel davis.doc rivers, tom boswell, purvis ellison, dave wohl, and marvin barnes. What a team!

If Adam Morrison will completely let go of the image he thought everyone loved; the "stache", the gross sloppy hair and the scaggly facial hair; and just work his rear off and hit the weights, who knows? This cat really can shoot from just about anywhere, but it won't work in the NBA like it did in college. You can't try to look cool while you're doing it unless you have REALLY great athleticism, which he doesn't. But if he really wants to be an NBA player, and is willing to pay the price, he might be a very good role player.

Morrison wouldn't quite make the "worst player ever" team, but he might be on an "all draft bust" squad. I'm a Nets fan, and therefore have had over the years a chance to see up close and personal some fine candidates for worst player ever. I nominate Yinka Dare. Nice guy, God rest his soul, and had an NBA body, but was truly without any basketball skill.

I challenge anyone to come up with a greater all draft bust team than the Nets can field: Pearl Washington (13th overall pick), Dennis Hopson (3rd), Ed O'Bannon (9th), Eddie Griffin (7th - OK, we traded him on draft night, but still) and Yinka (14th). Of course, all of these guys except Griffin precede the current excellent Net management team led by Rod Thorn.

I could make a case for Smush Parker being the worst player in the league...at least during an unbelieveably awful stretch in 06-07 where the Lakers desperately needed him to simply be consistent until injuries allowed people to get back. Parker made some of the worst decisions...some of the most rbain-dead plays I have ever seen at that level. Sure...I could pick some big guy that sits at the end of the bench and is slow...but that is hardly fair. I say...the worst guy is the guy that geets lots of minutes...lots of opportunity...and then Smushes it all up. To put a cap on how bad he was...when Phil jackson made comments about Smush's play...Smush attacked Phil as if he didn't know what he was doing.

Granted there are worse in a pure skill comparison. Smush actually has some damn fine skills...which is why I think that qualifies him for at elast a nod for the worst. Or...maybe it just really felt like it back in the spring of 06-07 when the wheels came off the Laker's buss...with Smush at the wheel.

Wrong, wrong and wrong again. Yuta Tabuse is the worst player to have played in the NBA in the last 20 years. Easily. He wasn't in the NBA for basketball reasons.

As for the deal, Lakers with the win. Radmanovic has never come up with a loose ball in his life, and will drive Larry Brown insane with his nonchalant turnovers.

I've been watching the NBA since the Nats were in Syracuse; in my feeble old mind, I've never seen a worse player than Goran Dragic out in Phoenix. You know how you say "I could take that guy off the dribble ..." Well, I could - and I'm 59 years old. Compared to Dragic, Morrison is Larry Bird.

As a Laker fan, I will miss Vlade...a little. I like him. He can play a very high level game...and when he brings it, you are certainly glad he is on your team. Charlotte, you will like him, I think. If you look at his comments after being traded, it is obvious he just sees himself as more than a role-player...even though that is all he can be with the Lakers. He says Jackson's sytem is not good for role players, and then compares himself to Kobe and Pao...well, there ya go...he is not them. He will be a starter on the 'cats, I am sure. And he will bo good. He was not going to be more than he was for the Lakers...and if is unhappy doing it, well we do not want him.

I love, however, that Charlotte fans are so willing to call Morrison the "worst" this or that ever. lol. He is essentially a rookie, that went to a team that did not have the ability to condition and teach and build him up, where he was injured and out for all of last year. He went to a team that needed him to walk in and be a starter in the NBA immediately. Bad teams with bad coaches (not Larry Brown...he just got there) like Charlotte are bad matches for players like Morrison. He is a skill player...he does not rely on sheer athletisism. He needs to work into a system...find his roles...find his game. Phil Jackson, who has unfairly been accused of not liking developing players, is just what Morrison needs. I mean, if he is not going to be able to become a good NBA player...better to find out in practice and situations rather than put the poor guy into the fire and making him perform. And who did he have to mentor him in Charlotte? On the Lakers, he will have a lot of guys with a lot of solid experience in winning to help him out. He may sink rather than swim, but at least it will be because of him and not because he is on a team that cannot afford to develope him.

Morrison is a shooter...he just needs to find his shots. He needs to play with a group who do not for a minute want to rely on him to win...yet. The Lakers will give him limited and situational shots to prove himself, while he gets to practice and learn with some of the best the game has ever had. And...if attitude has anything to do with how a player performs...well, he just landed a bench spot on the team favored to win it all...that should put a smile on his face and some bounce in his step.

I agree that Brown might be the best thing the Lakers got out of this trade...that and out from under Vlade's contract. It also frees up minutes for Walton and Ariza...both better team players day-in, day-out than Vlade. But, Morrison's potential is still there. Perhaps if he had spent more time on a sub-par losing team that had no interest in being patient with his development, that would totally be gone...but situations are different for him now, and I think everyone may still see him break out as a shooter. If not, at least he now has a real opportunity to learn rather than being put on the floor with a bad team and expected to develope on his own.

Clearly none of you watched Acie Earl or Alaa Abdenalby or Earl Watson for that matter.

@Roy: "Morrison is by far the worst player I have seen wear an NBA uniform"...

Seriously? Have you been watching the NBA for under 5 minutes?!!

I am a Laker fan and I can say that Vlade was the very best player in this trade - hands double down - by far.

You will probably really like the contribution he brings. He is one of the best 3pt shooters in the NBA and he does read the passing lanes reasonably well. He can be a space cadet, but he also functions better with more minutes - something he just wasn't going to get in LA.

At 6'10" he has a very quick release, with a high arching and accurate jump shot. He can rebound, but doesn't cut inside a lot. He can also drive, but you don't want him doing it in heavy traffic.

Why did the Lakers trade him?
1) He was unhappy with his minutes and not starting and there could have been chemistry issues with this going forward. We don't need this when we are trying for the championship this year.
2) He never could completely grasp the triangle offense. I suspect he will do much better under Larry Brown.
3) We need his salary to sign Ariza and perhaps LO this year.

That's exactly what the Lakers are going for. Pure financial move with a kicker (Brown). Keeping Ariza is the goal.

I am a Bobcats season ticket holder as well. First, the team already picked up his 5 million dollar option, so we were stuck with him next year already.

Adam has been terrible. Defensively, especially. Everyone killed the Cats after the Diaw deal, so I will wait until next week.

The real question surrounding the Cats is going to be what they do with their PG situation. You heard it hear: I see DJ being traded along with draft picks for a big name. Amare anyone?

The Bobcats already picked up Morrison's team option. He's on the books for at least next year, making the difference in salary basically one additional year at six million.

Adam Morrison is one of the worst offensive players of the last decade, which is a very bad thing considering he is also one of the worst defensive players of the last decade. How is this a bad trade? If I offer you a historically bad player + d-league pickup, do you give me one of your average rotation players? NO!!! You slam the door in my face.

The only good thing that can come of this on the Lakers' side is more playing time for Trevor Ariza to see if he can play well 35 minutes/night and a couple million more to try and keep him if he really is worth $8m/season. He most definitely will be offered the full MLE, and is worth closer to $15m.

The common thread to every trade Larry Brown has made since coming to the Bobcats is that he's made present-day improvements by getting players who will all be around making unreasonable money after he's gone, save Raja Bell (although he could be extended a couple years, given the way he's played since coming to Charlotte; I wouldn't put that past them).

They've sold out their chance to build a real contender by 2013 in exchange for a better chance to top out as the 6 seed by 2012. When they lose in the first round of the playoffs next year, Brown can wander off into consulting gigs with a somewhat redeemed reputation, having brought the Bobcats that far, and the general public won't be salary cap savvy enough to know that he screwed them with his trades in 2008-09. If they didn't make any trades from the start of the season, they'd probably have lost a few more games at this point, but they'd still be on track to start building around the core of Okafor, Wallace, and Augustin in the summer of 2011, when Richardson's deal expires. Now, that's delayed at least until the summer of 2012, when Diaw's deal expires, but Gerald expires in 2013, so the supposed core we'll be selling to any free agent that summer likely won't include Crash (assuming he's not traded before then, of course).

I am a Bobcats season ticket holder and Morrison has been the player I have most dreaded seeing on the court. Morrison is by far the worst player I have seen wear an NBA uniform. He should never have been allowed in the league. MJ had a history of disastrous choices and we in Charlotte were unlucky enough to have him perpetuate it here. One thing I will say is that it is not Morrisson's fault. He did not draft himself. He did not hire a new, untested coach for the team. He did not complain and I never saw him give less than a full effort on the court. The simple truth is that Morrisson just does not have the talent...and never will. Morrisson's value to the team was not just zero. Zero would be a step up from his worth. Everytime he was on the court he made the team worse. He could not hit shots. He could not defend. He could not assist. He could not rebound. If Vlad does no harm. If Vlad's worth is zero he will be a big improvement.

Adam is horrible, and Vlad at least looks like he's played/washed before. Salary cap is ambiguous. Vlad could be here, he could be traded, he could be a bargain, he could be a bust....etc. Eventually you have to stop worrying about your cap figures, and figure out how you're going to win some games.
