The State Of Minnesota Is Now The Edge Of Madness

In sports, and in particular the NBA, fans go through peaks and valleys of swagger, fervor, hunger, misery, desperation, and redemption, which leads to swagger.  Unless you’re a Lakers fan. Then you pretty much just have swagger. All the time.

Of these, I find desperation to be the most fun to watch. Redemption is like Homeward Bound. It’s sweet, and heartwarming, but it’s still a talking dog and you always have to question whether they would actually end up getting hit by a car in reality.

But desperation? That’s a special kind of fun. They’re like the Christopher Guest films. Awkward, unbelievable, yet instantly recognizable as behavior we are familiar with. After a period of darkness, a franchise will convince itself that any plan is the answer. Memphis’ three-year plan is a good example. The Celtics’ rebuilding effort pre-Garnett trade is another doozy. But man, Minnesota? That’s a swan dive into crazy juice. Industrial strength, high density crazyville.

Al Jefferson. Kevin Love. Three first round draft picks. Expiring contracts. New GM. New head coach. There was nothing but hope headed into this draft. And the fans were ready for that next step. For the jump-start into relevance again.

Just one problem.

The Timberwolves did not look themselves in the mirror before they walked into that draft room Thursday night.

Ricky Rubio has a rare concoction of elements that make him unique unto himself out of this draft class. He has star power, fan hype, professional employment, and capable handlers. This formula results in the one thing that can strike fear into the hearts of drafting small market teams. Leverage.

Rubio, as we all know, doesn’t have to commit to playing here. He can take his scrawny ass back across the water and make a good sum of money and continue to be idolized by his countrymen until such time as he can go where he wants to go. Kahn, for his part, is trying to play chicken with him. This talk of “well, it may be a few years.” Are you serious? Your star player? The big catch? The one you’re plugging on your website? He “might” be available “in a few years?”

Are you out of your freaking gourd?

But Kahn at least did what he thought was best for his franchise. And he drafted insurance in Flynn. We can debate exactly the damage that entering the night with three first round picks and walking out with only Johnny Flynn and Ellington actually playing next year another time. What I’m fascinated by is the reaction from Minnesota fans.

They’ve bought into the idea that “sure, he may not be around next year, but eventually he’ll be here.” What’s the success rate on that? And in the meantime, you have a #5 pick that has netted you absolutely nothing.  Not only that, but there’s the level of exaggeration the kid has created in the fanbase, even as he makes it pretty obvious he has no interest in suiting up in Minny’s colors.

We’re not just talking “Wow, he’s going to be a great addition to this team as we rebuild, the future still is bright!” No, no. We’re talking “He is (not ‘going to be’, is) better than Dwyane Wade and Deron Williams.” (CORRECTION 4:50pm EST: Derek politely points out that he’s not saying Rubio’s better than Wade or Williams, just that he wouldn’t trade Rubio for them. So there’s that.)  Let’s remember this is a kid who’s body frame is going to be pulverized by half the point guards in this league and whose play style most closely resembles a former white freak of nature out of LSU that is best known for never living up to his potential.  All of this, and the guy doesn’t want to play there.

Not that Minnesota fans are apparently aware of it. No, instead, they’ve decided to wage a jihad on sources who are widely respected not only by fans and media, but by the GMs themselves, under the guise of wanting transparency. Transparency which would, of course, eliminate their ability to siphon any information whatsover from GMs who honestly hate anyone involved in the media on a general basis. But that’s not what they really want. They want to lambast people for these subjects being relevant:

Above and beyond the sourcing nonsense and the lack of searching for answers to the questions listed above, can we also stop framing this issue in the following narratives?

  • Rubio just wants to end up in New York
  • Rubio would be much better off financially in a big market
  • Minnesota is cold
  • Donnie Walsh is David Kahn’s mentor

If you really sit down and think about it, these sentiments are meaningless gap-fillers.  Lots of players want to be on the big stage.  Of course there are more deals to be had in a huge city.  Lots of places are cold.  Lots of GMs earn their stripes under other active GMs.  These things are not unique to this situation.  Minnesota picked a kid who entered the draft and they don’t have to apologize for things that are true but hardly unique.

Hmm. I wonder why those things are being mentioned? Most likely because they’re both relevant and true.

Gap-fillers? Really? Because you know what a gap-filler is? Kahn talking like Rubio’s going to be a part of this franchise. He ain’t. That kid has leverage. And he’ll use it to get what he wants.

Now, it’s entirely possible Kahn is just positioning himself to get as much out of Walsh as he can. I have high hopes for Kahn and think he’s going to do a terrific job in Minnesota, despite the spin-out he did on draft night. He’ll get hammered for letting this “once in a lifetime” talent go, and if (when) Rubio ends up being just another point guard no one will go back and credit him. But it’s still the move to make.

But this situation is a perfect example of how fanbases can go absolutely insane in a short amount of time. Minnesota was a disaster under McHale. An outright disaster. And Minnesota is trying to convince itself that it can climb back to relevancy by showing Rubio all the wonderful things about Minnesota. And if he were a normal draft pick, or even a normal Euro draft pick, this wouldn’t be an issue. He’d be pumped about the money, figure out a way out of the buyout, and start listening to Replacements tapes and fashioning a winter wardrobe. But he’s not. He can hold out. He doesn’t have to stage a public feud or make it ugly. He can lay low, and wait for time to force Kahn’s hand, all the while enticing New York to pursue him further.

Maybe I’m way off. “Sources tell me” that there’s a good chance Rubio thinks he’s got a greater ability to get where he wants by playing in the NBA than by not. But let’s step back from the edge, take a look at this situation and deal with what’s actually going on, instead of blaming sites that are well connected for using anonymous sources.

I’m no Marc Stein. I’ve watched that dude operate in a locker room, and it was like watching the Godfather work a crowd. I talk to guys that are on the inside. Me? I’ve landed on the surface with a rock hammer and tried to chip my way in. And I can tell you from my very limited experience? GMs HATE most media members. Because essentially, their entire job is to try and take all the valuable information they have and give it away. Whether that’s juicy gossip, scouting reports, or contract details. And the distrust and revulsion is pretty clear, unless it’s a face that they know and trust. And that goes all the way from GMs down the line. And I can’t blame them for that. So when you work your way into a trusted position with these guys? You’re not going to use their names just so don’t leave the door open for a fan to start freaking out trying to find ways to rationalize his denial of what’s actually happening, namely, Ricky Rubio thinks you live in Siberia and that is not cool with him. And what’s Ricky? Ricky’s cool. Well, actually, Ricky’s scrawny and overhyped. But he’s also cool, supposedly.

What will now become awesome is that every step of the way as Rubio drags his feet on coming to Minnesota, there will be blame placed on the “New York media” for propogating the theory that it’s not just the buyout details but Rubio’s preference for location. T-Wolves fans now have a shadowy enemy to blame. And that’s much easier than pointing fingers at the star player that you want so badly to save you.

Now that I think about it, Minnesota fans and Cleveland fans should go bowling together.

UPDATE:

In response to the flurry of Timberwolf comments regarding Rubio wanting to come to Minny, I’d like to address something. Let’s try a little exercise.

You: Do you want to eat at Applebees?

Me: I want to eat.

How about this one.

You: Do you want to watch The Notebook?

Me: I want to watch a movie.

Or this.

You: Are you excited to visit a place where their biggest attraction is a shopping mall?

Me: I’m excited to travel.

Are you sensing a theme here? Reading between the lines?

Look, I love small market teams. They’re my bag. I want Minnesota to succeed. And if they trade Rubio, I think they can do just that. But this idea that “Rubio hasn’t said he doesn’t want to play in Minny! He hasn’t said it! LALALAAICAN’THEARYOUHEWANTSTO PLAYHERELALAALAL” is not going to be good in the longrun. He said “I’m excited to play in the NBA.” He said it was cold there. He said good things about other cities. And he skipped the freaking introduction!

I feel like I’m taking crazy pills. God Bless you, Minnesota. You are making for fine post-draft entertainment.

Matt,

The Wolves own the rights to Rubio indefinitely, barring him sitting out a year of any kind of basketball. He's not going to "get out" of this situation unless he plays ball with David Kahn, who has a complete(ly terrible) backcourt right now. I love the site and read daily, but this is easily one of the crappier posts you've ever produced. Stop-n-Pop over at Canis Hoopus had a legitimate, well-reasoned (if biased) argument that you reduced to a nonsensical "jihad." I'm sorry, Matt, that the Timberwolves will stand in the way of a player you're clearly not that high on seeing anyway. You should get your boy Corndogg to write a penance post because your blog cred ain't shit right now.

i agree minnesotans trying to reign in some questionable media hype is exactly like jihad

Marty McFly-

1) You're a slacker

2) Just to clarify (since snark doesn't come across very well when typed): Miami IS a popular location due to beaches/weather/venezuelan hotties. Detroit is a hole, but players don't seem to mind it there. Cleveland is also a hole, and that is well documented, but again, players don't seem to mind it there.

3) You're absolutely right- Rubio is the "pampered pooch".

4) Re: "who would want to play in Alaska?" Nobody. It's horrible up here. Nothing but ice and igloos. Nothing to see here. Move along, move along.

AK Dave,

Who would want to play in Alaska? Good thing you don't have an NBA team there. Miami? Are you serious? Besides Detroit, other "desirous" NBA destinations...have you lived in Cleveland? As for Dallas-Houston-Phoenix, I've lived there. You spend as much time running from the heat from April to late-September as you do in Minneapolis November-March running from the cold.

You would have thought Fegan would have learned from his recent experience in dealing with the Milwaukee (another glamorous NBA city) Bucks. I blame him for not educating Ricky and his parents on the NBA. Hint: In order for Ricky to achieve his dream of playing in the NBA he has to play the cards he's dealt. Ricky has been the pampered pooch in Spain but the NBA and playing against the world's best players is his dream and destiny. The dream starts in Minneapolis and we'll turn the heat up for him.

Matt -

Looking at the "volumes" of comments you have received to this article, you best befriend rather than diss Minnesotans. You're opinion doesn't mean squat.

I'm a little torn on this issue.

Part of me says: "The kid should be able to have a say in where he works and lives." I mean, I wouldn't want to live in Minnesota either, and I live in Alaska (which isn't colder, actually).

But then the voice of reason in my head says "Bullshit. If everybody got to play where they wanted, then Miami would have the greatest basketball team on the planet every year. It's an honor to play in the NBA, and no matter where you 'live', you are going to be traveling most of the time anyway, so what difference does it make?" I mean, this kid isn't getting paid to soak up the fucking sights and check out the beaches and enjoy the city. He's getting paid to play basketball- but now he wants to whine because he HAS TO play in Minnesota? Christ, people are happy to play in DETROIT, but this guy doesn't want to go to Minneapolis?

There are TONS of jobs in this world where you don't get much of a say in where you are assigned. Foreign service officers. Corporate officers of major companies. Politicians. Priests. Actors. Military men and women. On and on. That's life, Ricky-boy. Suck it up and don't be a little douche. In a few years, IF you prove yourself, you'll be in a better position to demand a trade, have a few more dollars in your pocket, and who knows- if you actually give it a chance instead of whining like a baby- you might actually LIKE Minnesota!

Wow. I mean, this is like a 10-year-old who whines about eating lasagna before he's even tried it, even though he loves pasta, cheese, and meat. He's totally convinced that he hates it and he's NEVER TASTED IT. I know he's only 18, but, damn it really shows.

Grow up, kid.

Matt Moore says "Rubio never struck me as a guy who’s “dream” is to play in the NBA."

Ricky Rubio says "I have a dream--I want to play in the NBA."

Good job by you, Matt!

The funniest part of the whole thing is blogs and people like ESPN trying to make up rumors. Like their "Breaking News: Walsh will call Minnesota". Really? And the other 28 teams in the league aren't going to call too?

Kahn has been very smart so far, and his relationship with Walsh isn't going to make him hand Rubio over. The Knicks have nothing to offer to the Wolves' future so it's useless to try to make those rumors up.

As for Rubio himself, who cares if he comes over this year, or for that matter the next? The Wolves own his rights, and if he waits two years and finally says "My path to the NBA goes through Minnesota," which is does, he'll come over. The Wolves aren't going to be good for the next two seasons, so at least have Rubio when they have a better chance, right?

And if Rubio doesn't want to come over, he can sit in Spain.

http://twolvesblog.com/200906292309/minnesota-timb...

Setting the record straight on what I actually said about Rubio.

I'm a Wolves fan, and I really don't think I'm being delusional. What was Kahn supposed to do? If he passes on Rubio at 5 and 6, he's skewered in the press. If he accepts a bad draft-day trade for 5 so someone else gets Rubio, he's skewered. So he does the right thing and takes him. And he's right, we can wait.

Rubio can make decent money overseas, but if he wants the big bucks (endorsements, not just contract money), that happens in the NBA. And if he wants to play in the NBA, he does it for us unless he wants to sit out for a year. I don't see how that helps him. And Garnett didn't exactly go broke playing for us.

The Wolves should listen to trade offers, and if they're good enough and we take one, I'm fine with that. But we have no reason to sell him at below market value. I'd rather have Rubio never play in the NBA than see that happen. And I can wait. Kahn's leverage is our patience.

Not only can Minnesota afford to wait, it might even be in their best interest to wait. Remember, we're talking about a PG who averated 7.3 turnovers per 40 minutes last season. Rubio may have been playing professionally for several years now, but he's still a project.

If Ricky Rubio were a soccer player, he would be loaned out to smaller club. If he were a baseball player, he would be playing in the minors. The guy could turn out to be a superstar, but if that is to happen, he needs to play. Minnesota's eventual coach may not be willing to hand out minutes to a point guard gives the ball away - in that case, it might be in everybody's best interest for Rubio to spend another year in Spain.

Minny will trade Rubio, maybe not to NY but to some other team that pleases Rubio/Fegan. I give credit to Kahn for drafting a valuable trade asset. Now he just needs to put a deal together that makes sense to the Spanish diva and his handlers.

Auswulf & Mike,

Rubio is the one with all of the leverage. He's 18 with options to play in any league he wants to. He's an asset to the NBA given his style, age, and nationality. Matt is 100% correct in his last comment. Rubio can wait as long as he needs to.

The Wolves can't wait. They have to get better. They will only look like fools picking a guy who had no intentions of playing for them, especially when he is a trade-able asset. So then it boils down to stupid decision making. If they don;t deal him, then they drafted a guy out of spite. You think David Stern is going to watch an asset like Ricky Rubio sit in Europe for 2 years because some new GM want s to dig his heels in? Rubio was only drafted to deal, and Kahn is merely making sure he can get the best deal.

If he has to buy his way out of Europe, don't you think it will damn sure be a situation to his liking?

I read the bottom of the post. And while I gladly would defer to you on a lot of NBA-related items, I've been following Rubio carefully for awhile. He is a passionate player, moreso than the indifferent Spaniards you talk about in your comment.

http://myespn.go.com/blogs/truehoop/0-41-141/Ricky...

He might play for years in the NBA without making a penny, (at least before endorsements are considered).

Rubio says that wouldn't bother him. "I have a dream," he said. "I want to play in the NBA." If his rookie contract nets him zero, he says, "I don't care."

-------

Sounds to me like he wants to play in the NBA. If he wants to play in the NBA, (and if Dan Fegan wants to make a dime off of him), there are just 2 ways he can get out of MN:

1. David Kahn trades him. Based on what Kahn is saying, and based on the reality of what the other NBA teams can offer, that's not happening. Maybe you've seen it, but in his post-draft letter to fans, Kahn sounds pretty sold on Rubio.

http://blogs2.startribune.com/blogs/wolves/2009/06...

2. He stops playing professionally for a year. Kid sounds like he wants to play basketball. Don't think he's going to stop for a year.

I can't imagine someone who grew up in a gorgeous area of Spain would be thrilled about playing in Minneapolis. Of course he's not "excited" to come here.

One of the most telling things I heard in interviews with Rubio himself-- he doesn't know anything about specific NBA teams. He couldn't name any players on the Kings-- he said that they were young and thats all that mattered to him.

If you really think that this drama is anything but 100% Fegan, you're kidding yourself.

"Unnamed sources" have been proven 100% entirely wrong in regards to the Brett Favre/Vikings saga. Minnesota fans' distrust of them is defensible.

Also, I'd like to know what "leverage" Rubio has. The Wolves got him for Mike Miller and Randy Foye, both of whom would have expired after this season anyways. The Wolves are going into the season with 2 other quality first round picks in Flynn and Ellington. The Wolves, who are already planning on missing the playoffs, have 3 first round picks in 2010, and will be joined by Nikola Pekovic.

On the other hand, you have an 18 year old kid whose dream is to play in the NBA. This year.

It sounds like the Wolves are the ones with the leverage here. If any team can wait, it's the Wolves.

And based on my "sources," (Rubio himself) he doesn't have a problem playing in Minneapolis. It sounds like Dan Fegan is the one that wants him elsewhere.

Rubio plays for the Timberwolves next season.

Mike, thanks for reading.

Leverage exists in that Rubio doesn't have to play for them, ever. He can hang out in Spain for as long as he wants until Kahn is blue in the face and he can get out of it. Then go whre he wants.

Rubio never struck me as a guy who's "dream" is to play in the NBA. You never get that from the Spanish guys. They all seem like "Oh, this is a cool gig. I can make some bank here so I can buy more drinks for girls on the beach in Spain." He's never seemed like a kid who's willing to kill himself to get here. And his talk about going back to Spain backs that up.

I would ask that you read my update at the bottom of the post regarding Rubio's desire to play in Minnesota.

So Rubio, who want to play in the NBA from all accounts has the "leverage" of....not playing.
I think they call that cutting off your nose to spite your face. The only party with leverage are the Wolves.

I'm in the position of being a Wolves fans, but not Minnesotan. I'm staggered the whole "watch Donnie Walsh click his fingers" business is given so much credance. If anyone can produce a half decent trade from their roster, good luck to you.

Based on very little, an entire narrative that consisted of Minnesota rolling over and giving the Knicks what they want was created. We haven't heard from his agent or Rubio himself to say "hell no, I won't go". Why wouldn't Wolves fans resent that sort of journalism?

Matt, thanks for the interesting piece. Afraid I don't agree with your premise, however. Time will tell how the Rubio matter plays out, but answer one question: If Rubio is so enamored by New York, why did he only workout in Sacramento?

A marvelous piece of writing ( gag, cough, gag) by someone who doesn't even get the whole story. Have you SEEN how much Rubio is making in Europe. Not even the NBA MINIMUM!! Anyway, this is just another writer who thinks he knows everything and I'm just a fan who knows he doesn't. Has Ricky or his agent ever said " we will not play in MN?" No. He has said that he is looking forward to playing in the NBA. So, as far as I am concerned, you can blow it.
