That's actually not true, genkikid. I asked five bigmen off the record who they most hated playing. Same answer every time. "Duncan." My favorite answer?

Player: "Duncan. Tim's the strongest."
Me: "Really?"
Player: "Oh, yeah, man. It's like trying to guard a tree."

Duncan, the best player of this decade.

Say what???

You ask any NBA player, ANY NBA player, who they did not want to face - Duncan is not their answer.

Though he has faded as of late, the man who caused other NBA players to tremble was / is the one and only Shaq Daddy!

I loved this, Rob. If it helps, Duncan has usually played with big men that had a shorter ranger than him, or no range at all, so the power forward label seems more fitting to me.

As you say, though, in the end it's meaningless. Duncan is worth making the effort to avoid a convenient label, and it's a please to read such a good post about him. Kudos, and thanks for writing and sharing.

The game is quite simple really. somebody brings the ball up court. This person cannot be pressed with one man. If it is Magic Johnson fine. If it is somebody small fine. Start the offense, drive to the hoop and score the ball when needed.

the second position is someone on the wing foul line extended and above. this is the primary scoring position - see Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant etc.

then there is the baseline and block areas. People here drive to the hoop and get fouled and rebound the offside. Nicee to have someone who posts a lot, but mid range AKA Nowitski is nice too..

It is also sweet if running some sort of spot offense where guys pop to their spots for their money shot be that shot what it may... Jack Sikma with the block fade away...Abdul Jabbar on the block hooking...etc.etc. Seriously it all comes down to coaching.... and utilizing the talent at your disposal..

Guessing if someone is a 1 or a 2 or a 3 or a 4 or a 5 means that you can ONLY use a player who fits your confused formula - a formula that worked for someone else usually. the game is not that complicated.

Rob, this was great. When it comes down to it, I think height matters the most when it comes to positional designations. But that doesn't always work as you've demonstrated with the Spurs. It seems there are more players who defy the traditional position than those who fit neatly within it, so I think it's time we evolve in how we refer to them as well. I can't tell you how many times I've written "power forward Tim Duncan" and then hit backspace a buncha times and replace it with "center"and re-replace, etc. You've done a great job explaining why that is.

A couple months ago, I did some research (http://3.ly/t3js) on the topic and found there are differences in shot distribution for the typical player in each position. Power forwards, as you point out, have moved away from the basket and take as many long twos as any other position. 10 years ago would we have seen that?
