It's not exactly true that "in the early to mid-80s there wasn't a best player in the NBA. It was Magic and Bird." In the early 80s, perhaps (though Magic wasn't in the discussion), people argued between Bird, Moses Malone, Kareem, and Dr. J. By the mid 80s, though, it was Bird. No question. 1987 Magic and Jordan both entered the discussion, and by 1988 Bird was out of the discussion--it was between Jordan and Magic.

It is impressive that Kobe has stayed in the discussion so long. Still, LeBron's better.

I like the last sentence, it's just an opinion, granted. But when it comes to selecting an MVP, would like to see a list of the criteria used. Because some years the selection was puzzling to say the least and downright bizarre.

KB24 is the best player in the NBA no doubt. Until that guy in Cleveland starts winning rings he can't really be considered to be the best. Stats aside; the NBA is about winning and success is about Championships.

If I had to start a franchise right now I'd choose LeBron, but if I had to win a single game I would go with Kobe without a doubt! LeBron does more for his team, because his team needs him to do so. He's a fantastic team player. Kobe on the other side can take over games all alone.
This debate is making me sick anyway, I don't really think we need to have a SINGLE best player in the NBA. Can't we just agree on having so many different kinds of players and everyone is great in his own way.
If you ask me: (personal opinion!!)
Kobe is the clutchest.
LeBron is the most versatile.
Tim Duncan is the best big man to me.
Dirk Nowitzki is the big man who shoots best.
I don't want to decide on who's the best PG because that is reallly hard to say, depends on what kind of play you like.
Billups is the PG I'd go with in important games, if the game's on the line or in the playoffs.
CP3 is amazing, Deron Williams is not far behind. Steve Nash is incredible for his age but he'll probably never win a ring and his assist average is also due to the Suns playing style. Rondo is great too but I think on another team he wouldn't be as good.
As I said this is a personal opinion and if someone says that to him, Gasol is the best big man and Wade is the clutchest, I can totally understand because it's all about personal taste. And tastes can't be discussed.

I just want to note that My Darling Clementine is a much better Earp/Holliday movie than Tombstone.

I always loved that quote: 'I'll be your huckleberry'.

anyway: LAKERS FAN here who acknowledges that LEBRON has been the BEST player in the world for THE LAST THREE YEARS.

I mean kobe is technically, in the truest sense of the word, great but lebron does things kobe has never done and could never do in terms of strength and speed and passing.
