Love this analysis! Too bad the freaking pictures are firewalled for me. But I can read, that's fine.

It's really neat that instead of positional matchups, we're talking shot-location matchups. Keep it coming.

P.S. - If you want those images to turn out more clear with less little dots all over the places, save them as .png files and not .jpg files. Word.

Yo Tom,

The Yahoo basketball blog Ball Don't Lie featured this article with the tag line: "Tom Haberstroh of HoopData.com takes a closer look at shot loactions." So naturally I had to come check it out, and it's a real interesting article with great research.

One thing I noticed which is interesting is that Average offensive teams shoot just about the same pct against Good defenses and Average defenses, but are significantly more efficient against Bad defenses. The same goes for Bad offensive teams. What this says to me is that it is not necessary to be a Good mid-range Defensive team. As long as you're not straight up Bad, the Average and Bad team will perform about the same against you. (And the good team is liable to light you up regardless.)

All basketball aside, how's everything else? Are you still at ESPN? Been back to the 'port lately?

Hope all's well man.

So you're saying good three point shooting teams are mostly unaffected by opposing defensive strength.

I'd say your analysis on why threes are like they are is accurate although you missed another part of it.

The poor 3 shooting teams need poor 3 defending teams to be effective as a team with any semblance of defending the three limits them because their 3 point shooting requires an open look, similarly the good three point shooting teams just require that they get a semi clean look and its just as good as if it was open.
