The Grizzlies management stated after the 2008 draft that the Gasol trade was the first piece of a 3 year plan to regain competitiveness. Getting their one year early wouldn't be needed to justify that stance. Being competitive this year is plenty justification for the team's rebuilding efforts being a success.

However, a return to the playoffs too early and another 4-0 sweep could do serious harm to the fans of Memphis. The Grizzlies are currently 0-12 in the playoffs. How would 0-16 re-energize the fan base? That makes no sense. Be close but come up short, add a needed veteran and a draft pick to the team and next year the team is in excellent shape to make a run that goes beyond a first round humiliation would energize the fans without a bad taste in their mouth to end the year. A lottery pick (re-acquired from Washington for Javaris Crittenton no less who was acquired in the Gasol trade) would go a lot further to re-awaken the Grizzlies fan base than a sweep at the hands of Pau Gasol and the Lakers after all.

The Grizzlies performance this season has already justified the trade. Even Gregg Popovic admits that and he was one of the most vocal opponents of the trade after all. What more justification does the team need than to be above .500 at the All-Star break. Please don't punish Grizzlies fans by having a great season tarnished by ending with a 0-16 playoff record!

I still don't buy the distinction you make between New Orleans and Memphis. You seem to be operating under the conclusion that the management thinks Peja/Peterson/Posey are keeper pieces and that this team as-is is a contender. Of course they don't think that. But give me one GM who would trade for those contracts. The team is not that solidified with their fanbase that they can afford to tank, especially with the Saints being the last team standing this year (why is this relevant? Well, because historically Hornets attendance takes a huge jump in January when the Saints are done). Shinn doesn't have another business-- playoff revenue is worth something to him, and there is a certain prestige that comes with, a couple years in the future, being able to say the team has been consistently successful enough to make the playoffs for X years. I don't believe for a second the Hornets management thinks the older guys on their roster are part of their future as a contender. They're already looking at them as massive expirings and being happy with whatever they can get out of them until then.

I've made this argument before, though, so I'll let it go. It's just... weird. I think it's your personal bias.
