Ben Wallace. Statesman, Scholar, Badass

Wallace not only wants to represent clients, he wants to tell them his long-shot story and make them realize their lives are not over despite youthful mistakes. Wallace is doing plenty of research now into law schools. The thought has been brewing for years, and he even spoke to former Pistons coach John Kuester about it three years ago when Wallace played in Cleveland.”It would not surprise me at all to see him practicing law,” teammate Tayshaun Prince said. “Not at all.”

Prince has heard Big Ben go to work with convincing presentations. His most famous speech came in the 2003 playoffs, when the Pistons trailed the Orlando Magic, 3-1, in the first round.

“He is very convincing,” Prince said with a smile.

Wallace’s message was clear. The Pistons won the series.

Couple things here.

1. I want you to imagine taking a defendant in a civil suit to court and the opposing counsel is Ben Wallace.  Wouldn’t you just give up right there? Hell, wouldn’t you just offer up money on the spot?

“I’LL SETTLE RIGHT NOW, HE CAN HAVE HALF WHAT I OWN.”

“Mr. Moore, you’re the plainti…”

“I DON’T CARE GIVE THE MAN HIS MONEEEEE.”

2. How spectacularly awesome is it that Ben Wallace is this well-spoken, inspirational, law-school-attending badass? You knew from interviews Wallace was more insightful than his on-court demeanor gave on (and an appearance in Chris Ballard’s “The Art of a Beautiful Game” didn’t hurt), but this is such a bold step. For every ten players that are stranded when their playing days are over, there’s a Wallace who’s not only planning on going forward with his life, but doing it in a positive way.

3. GIVE THAT MAN HIS MONEEEEE.

4. In the Detroit News post, there’s a quote from Kuester, who apparently put the lawyer bug in Wallace’s ear back in Cleveland. Do you realize what this means?

You guys!

SOMEONE ON THE PISTONS DIDN’T HATE JOHN KUESTER! HOW INCREDIBLE IS THAT?!

(Note: I’m very excited about being able to feel bad for and like John Kuester now that he’s been canned. Kind of the anti-Porter effect.)

(Note2: REALLY, KAHN? Bringing in Nellie for an interview wasn’t bad enough, you brought in the guy who wanted to slow down the Su… nevermind.)
