A source told NBA.com’s David Aldridge that at one point, NBA commissioner David Stern was emphatically directing a comment — and pointing his finger — at Wade, the Miami Heat’s All-Star guard. Wade objected and interrupted Stern, reportedly saying: “Don’t point your finger at me. I’m a grown man. I have children.”

Well, now that must have been a testy exchange. Nothing says working together like wagging your finger at someone. And as Tom Ziller notes (and every other person knowledgeable about the NBA can attest), Stern has a flair for the condescension. Clearly Dwyane Wade had had enough of such treatment and delivered a new tone to the meetings. In the 60s, this sudden about face of a tone toward the imperial Stern might have been termed a “brand new bag”. Let us turn to urban dictionary to properly define this term:
Making a major change in one’s life for the best, especially applies to people who have made themselves more attractive from ugly qualities.
Granted that at first glance Mr. Wade did not make himself more attractive by getting ugly with Stern. But sometimes getting nasty to terminate rude behavior is necessary. In this roundabout fashion, Wade got himself, and brought to the meeting, a brand new bag.
In the much more literal sense, it was also revealed this weekend that Robert Sarver has been spending his huge savings from gutting the Phoenix Suns every chance he gets on new designer hand bags for his wife. Apparently she has fanciful ideas on what do with them like stuffing the concept of the Mid-Level Exception inside. I’ll leave it to HP maestro Matt Moore to deliver the sarcasm here:
Your wife… wanted you to bring home the mid-level exception… in a designer bag.
I’ll take “woefully removed from the economic realities of America†for $600, Alex.
And in the spirit of such bag talk, this week’s lockout jam is “Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag”. The Otis Redding version. It’s that much of a new bag. Sorry James Brown.
