BACK THE TRUCK UP, KEVIN PITTSNOGLE IS BACK IN THE (D-)LEAGUE?!

Los Angeles D-Fenders at Albuquerque Thunderbirds

The good news for Kevin Pittsnogle is that the D-Fenders don’t really have a center who will demand a lot of his defensive attention, and also that it’s hard to miss all of your shots two games in a row. At some point one of them is going to go in. Los Angeles also doesn’t have a lot of players who can challenge Pittsnogle’s outside shots, either because they’re more post-oriented (Longar Longar) or because they’re not tall enough (pretty much everyone else on the roster). I know the Thunderbirds won in a walk last night with Pittsnogle playing terribly on the offensive end, but he could end up being the key player for them tonight.

Not going to lie. I assumed Pittsnogle was still handing out gold stars and hanging out in West Virginia. I mean, you gotta realize, every D-League coach I’ve talked to about Pittsnogle opens up his answer by shaking his head.  This is what happens when college teaches a big man that he needs to be a dominant scoring option by being a high-volume range-shooter.  At least Andrea Bargnani keeps himself in elite condition.

I want to root for the guy, to say he could warrant a call-up because of his ability with a renewed emphasis on defense and rebounding (seven last night, we won’t talk about that 0-10 thing).  But Pittsnogle has never approached the pro-game as one he needed to adapt himself to, it was just a matter of people realizing how good he is. You want to make it on a roster? Drop your conception of what you think you are and embrace what the coaches tell you you are.

The Reno Bighorns Are Kinda Loaded

Although NBA teams haven’t shown all that much interest in Rod Benson in the past few years he spent in the D-League—at least not in the tangible form of an actual call-up—he’s still a player to keep an eye on due to the terrific rebounding ability and underrated basketball IQ he brings to the floor. He’s added weight to his skinny frame (the main thing holding him back) and was simply excellent in the Indiana Pacers training camp from what they told us. Teams might like to see him show more of a mid-range jump-shot this year, something he’s only displayed small flashes of in the past. Will this be the year that the Boom Tho movement hits the NBA?

Desmon Farmer has some NBA experience under his belt—he’s made the final cut in both Seattle and San Antonio—and will surely be one of the best scorers in the D-League again this year. He plays with a frenetic energy (probably overly so at times) and is capable of both getting to the rim or making shots from beyond the arc—which is more than most wing players in this league can say. He would be wise to exert more energy on the defensive end of the ball this season and show that he can play mistake-free, team oriented basketball (he can be very turnover prone at times) if he wants to prove that he can play a role in the NBA. We put him at the 3 in our lineup more out of necessity than anything.

Farmer’s 28, so he’s outside of the upside range, which is a shame. He’s got so much natural talent on offense, and has never been able to limit his turnovers and commit on defense. Still, I can’t see any reason why Reno shouldn’t win their division easily, with the talent they have on board, barring call-ups or injury.

PS: Boom Tho.

Hey, It’s Just A Season. It’ll Open Eventually.

Scores of workers were busy throughout the Jam Events Center as they frantically try to get the facility operational by the time the NBA Development League season begins.

But to be on the safe side, the Jam has delayed its home opener by four days. The home opener is now Thursday, Dec. 3, at 7 p.m. vs. Utah. The original opener, scheduled for Sunday against the Los Angeles D-Fenders, will now be a road game. The D-Fenders and Jam will play two straight in Bakersfield Feb. 2-3 (only one of those dates was a Jam home game originally) to make up for the site switch this weekend.

They built this brand new arena, and the Bakersfield Jam aren’t quiiiiiite going to get it open in time for the season opener. That’s awkward.

The Clippers could really use the Jam. Or, we could just make the Defenders an NBA team and relegate the Clippers. That’d work.

C’mon, Who Doesn’t Love Lobsters?

On the surface, the numbers might not look all that impressive. D-League president Dan Reed said that league attendance averaged 2,800 fans per game last season.

But the more relevant number was 2.25 million. That’s the amount, in dollars, that Oklahoma City Thunder owner Clay Bennett paid to buy the rights to a D-League team in Tulsa last year.

That confirmed, Reed said, that the league franchise values have just about quadrupled in the last couple years. Given the growth we’ve seen in minor league baseball, coupled with the focus on value in this economy, it wouldn’t be surprising if the D-League becomes the next hot property for both the fans in the communities in which they play and investors.

Rovell’s usual brilliant reporting on the D-League and the Red Claws’ inaugural season. If they can survive till the Celtics have some young prospects, I’d expect this one to be a premier D-League team.

This article highlights a central component that’s going to be huge over the next few years. Many minor leagues struggle with trying to do one particular thing well. Sell tickets. Expand market. Get exposure. Not be the current ABA. But the D-League does a number of things well, but no one thing great. And that’s largely on account of the CBA.  If, and it’s a big IF, the CBA can get reworked to allow rehab stints and cap-exempt roster spots, the league is going to be able to feature top-level talent, which will drive attendance, which will make more fans for the A, which will help revenue…

It’s a beautiful circle. IN MY HEAD.

That Depends On What Your Definition of “Is Better” Is.

In other news, Marcus Williams and Mike Conley continue to be paid to play point guard at the professional level. It’s not just the breadth of the Grizzlies’ failure this year, it’s the depth as well. Multifaceted, they are.
