Halifax Rainmen 104 – Moncton Miracles 95

Hot off the press! My game of the week was this afternoon’s matchup between Moncton and Halifax. For the the first half of the opening period, there was little defense and a lot of offense to be found. The Rainmen and Miracles both easily found their way to the basket for a score or kickout to wide open 3-point shooters. Although, Halifax standout Joey Haywood made a great jump into the passing lane getting a steal for a breakaway layup. After settling to 20-19 advantage for Moncton, the game slowed down as both teams began to struggle for points, but Halifax less so ending the quarter in the lead, 29-24.

For the 2nd quarter, Halifax ultimately assumed greater control, although they let Moncton back into temporarily. The Miracles nearly tied the game at 39, but Halifax surged ahead with a 9-point run keyed by a Justin Johnson 3 pointer and Taliek Brown instantly stealing Moncton’s subsequent inbounds pass for an easy layup. By the half, the score rested at 56-49 in favor of Halifax thanks to a 13 to 5 turnover margin in favor of the Rainmen.

In the second half, Halifax would teeter on the cusp of blowing the Miracles out, but would always relax as the lead ballooned. Finally with 5 minutes left in the game, the Rainmen turned it on and turned the Miracles out for good. The lead surged to 17 points and Halifax dragged the clock out to secure the win, although Tyrone Levitt put up an incredibly unnecessary and rushed layup that allows teams to squirm back into a game. But not this one. With the win, Halifax brings their record to 4-4. Moncton is now 0-10.

Box Score Standouts of the Week

Akeem Wright

In a barn burner last Sunday, Oshawa barely outlasted the Rainmen 115 – 111 in large part to Akeem Wright’s blockbuster 33 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals and block. Per my norm, putting up 33 points doesn’t always impress, but doing it on 6-6 FTs, 9-15 2-pt FGs and 3-4 3Pt FGs gets me in a tizzy. Just another marvelous night for Wright.*

*the game was actually played in the afternoon. Moving on…

Will Blalock, Anthony Anderson and Greg Plummer

That’s right, a three-for-one standout special. I couldn’t choose just one from this troika of outstanding performances on Wednesday night. In their blowout of Summerside, the Saint John Mill Rats received an uber-efficient offensive performance from Anthony Anderson, which is the norm for the NBL’s leading scorer. 23 points on 10-13 shooting. Amazingly, teammate Greg Plummer outdid Anderson by netting 25 points on 10-11 shooting.

With all that hot shooting, it’s little surprise that PG Will Blalock dropped 13 dimes on the night, but also only turned the ball over once. Blalock also tossed in 18 points on 5-5 shooting for good measure. The only chink in his armor was going 6-10 from the FT. But that’s nitpicking. Blalock’s 13 assists set the NBL record forone game.

Ricky Volcy

Ringing in the new month, the Quebec Kebs did a little smacking of the Summerside Storm, too. Sure other players put up more points, but I was enamored with Ricky Volcy’s Tom Gola like performance. Mimicking the hall of famer’s all-around skills, Volcy had a definitive glue-guy performance: 12 points, 8 rebounds, 8 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks with one turnover.

Eddie Smith

Finally, guard Eddie Smith was a disruptive, annoying force in favor of the London Lightning as the Ontarian squad defeated the Summerside Storm… sorry, the Storm turned out to be this week’s whipping boy. Anyhoo, Smith dazzled with 23 points, 8 assists, 6 rebounds and a whopping 8 steals. With those 8 thefts, Smith is now the NBL’s all-time leader for steals in one game.

“I’ve been in two leagues where we hired a higher profile NBA person to serve as commissioner of the league and that individual did absolutely nothing except walk away with his paycheque,” said Andre Levingston, the president and chief executive officer of the nascent league. “They didn’t do what was needed to help grow the league or bring opportunities to the league.

- National Basketball League names John Kennedy commissioner

Since we last convened, the NBL has selected its first-ever commissioner, John Kennedy. The NBL may be in its nascent stages, but like its cross-border equivalent, the NBA, it  recognizes the importance of advertising dollars and the windfall that comes from TV money. Ticket sales from games is a nice start, but real success, stability and growth emerges from broadcast revenue. Underwhelming TV income is a major factor that precipitated the (mercifully dead) NBA Lockout. Hopefully, the new commissioner can quickly find a TV partner to showcase  these games to the larger public. And I’ve viewed CTV programming before. You can’t tell me a London Lightning vs. Quebec Kebs game is less appealing than The Littlest Hobo on a Saturday.

Anyhoo, here’s the action from this past week. Only four games took place, so we have room enough to feature them all!

NBLC Roundup: Mill Rats Blown Away

Spurred on by a season-high crowd, the Halifax Rainmen hiked their winning streak to three with a 122-104 victory over the Saint John Mill Rats on Friday night at the Metro Centre.

Playing in front of 3,562 fans, the hosts used a prolonged surge beginning in the second quarter to quiet their Maritime rivals, who had come into the National Basketball League of Canada contest on a three-game unbeaten spree of their own.

Halifax Rainmen 122 – Saint John Mill Rats 104

This was my appointed NBL game viewing of the week and, naturally, I was late to the festivities Friday night. Tuning in via webstream midway through the 1st quarter, I found Saint John holding the slimmest of leads, 14-13, over Halifax. The quarter finished in a 27-27 tie. Rainman Eric Crookshank, a 6’6″ forward from Oakland, CA, was a pleasure to watch around the basket.  Post ups and back downs weren’t his calling card on the night, but instead it was fluid, cutting movement to get open for passes and also a spectacular put back dunk on a missed layup while trailing a fastbreak.

As the 2nd quarter opened up, the Rainmen began to apply a frightening defense upon the Mill Rats. Orien Greene on one particular play broke up a Mill Rat fastbreak and took it coast-to-coast the other way for a three-point play after getting fouled converting the layup. That play put Halifax up 49 – 42. Greene summarily converted a 3-point field goal, which was followed by an and-1 play from teammate Taliek Brown. The score at the half was 60 – 51 in favor of Halifax. Crookshank had 12 points in the half and Greene contributed 8 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists.

The 3rd quarter commenced with a string of great plays from Halifax. A 3-pointer, then a long two, a transition layup and a claustrophobic defense annihilated any chance for a Saint John comeback. The game was clearly getting out of hand and I switched over to view the beginnings of the Oshawa Power and London Lightning showdown.

But not before the Rainmen detonated two exciting plays. The first was a towering baseline finger roll by Brown after he blew past a lunging defender at the three-point line. The second was a fastbreak straight from the Showtime Lakers. Pushing the ball upcourt, a cross-lane pass was thrown to a Rainman who then quickly dropped a behind the back bounce pass as he flowed out of bounds to a trailing teammate who easily converted the layup. The score was 84-63 Halifax. Game. Blouses.

But since I’ve last rounded up the NBL, the Mill Rats did put the first blemish on the London Lightning’s record. Saint John upset the then-undefeated Lightning 96-86 last Sunday the 13th.

Box Score Standouts of the Week

Al Stewart – G Summerside Storm

In the Storm’s 119 – 101 victory over Moncton, Stewart lodged 22 points, 11 rebound, 7 assists and 5 steals in a performance worthy of Denver Nuggets legend Fat Lever. The only drawback was the 6 turnovers, but he did finish 7-8 from the field.

In the same game, forward Chris Cayole finished with 27 points on 11-19 shooting including 5-11 from three-point range.

Anthony AndersonG Saint John Mill Rats

Anderson put together a fine performance in the Mill Rats’ 91-88 victory over Oshawa on the 14th. Proving particularly potent from downtown (5-10) Anderson finished with 27 points on just 18 shots. He also chipped in 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals while playing the full 48 minutes of action.

In the Mill Rats’ contest with Summerside on the 17th, Anderson again proved the marksman with 35 points  on just 18 shots and in only 32 minutes of action, spearheading the Saint John victory, 106-90.

Ralphy Holmes – G Quebec Kebs

Holmes was highly efficient for Quebec in their Wednesday night matchup in Oshawa. Holmes went 7-9 from the field for 19 points and also contributed 10 rebounds and 6 assists  in 36 minutes of play.

Taliek BrownG Halifax Rainmen

And we end the roundup where it began, Friday night’s Rainmen – Mill Rats contest. Taliek delivered a stellar performance every point guard should envy. The Rainman finished Friday night’s matchup against Saint John with 18 points on 9-13 shooting while also corralling 5 rebounds and getting his hands on 4 steals. Most impressively though was his 11 assists and 1 turnover on the night.

NBLC Roundup: Lightning Strikes Halifax

Welcome to the 1st National Basketball League of Canada (NBLC) Roundup! My hope is to give a general overview every week of league action and to also catch a game live via webstream and deliver my take of the action.

London Lightning 109 – Halifax Rainmen 90

An impressive blowout victory for the London Lightning in Nova Scotia, Saturday evening.

The game’s 1st quarter was a fairly even affair as both teams scored 28 points. The Rainmen of Halifax were able to keep the tempo up with their press and swingman Rodney Buford dropped 12 points in the quarter on the strength of turnaround jumpers and a three. C/F Abdullahi Kuso notably gave a valiant effort on the offensive boards, taking three strong attempts on one trip before finally getting a whistle and two FT attempts. Moses Malone is nodding approvingly.

For London, Gabe Freeman (20 points on the night) was able to work his way into the middle for several good shots, most notably a give-and-go off an inbounds play that resulted in a swooping bank shot plus the harm for a three-point play.

As the 2nd quarter commenced, the Lightning struck hard and fast in pushing their lead to 51-41 by halftime. The 2nd half continued the trend of the 2nd quarter: London considerably upped the defensive pressure, which Halifax refused to deal with correctly leading to forced shot after forced shot. With the bricks a-flyin’, London was able to get into the open court either for a transition basket or they pulled back and found open men spotting up around the three-point arc as DeAnthony Bowden intrepidly pushed the pace on the break keeping Halifax on their heels.

Freeman continued his good play in the 2nd half with a couple of mid-range jumpers.  Meanwhile, Taylor King (21 points) was absolutely deadly from downtown and delivered the final blow early in the fourth with a dagger that pushed the lead to 26 and deflated what was left of Halifax’s spirit.

Earlier in the week, the NBL got into full swing with a full slate of action on Thursday night. Well, as full as can be. With the odd number of teams in the league someone had to sit out and it was the Mill Rats of St. John. The most enticing performance of the big opening night was that of Lawrence Wright, forward for the Rainmen in the 1st game of the home-and-home series between Halifax and London that finished Saturday.

[flash http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OsCauhllgng w=600 h=400]

Although losing 118-110, Wright was spectacular in 29 minutes off the bench with a Larry Bird shooting line: 10-14 FG, 3-4 3PT and 6-7 FT. The shooting may have been Birdian, but his rebounding echoed SwenNater en route to 7 offensive boards. Those 29 points, by the way, are the most ever in an NBL game. Not a huge sample size, but that’s something to hang your hat on.

In other outstanding performances, Mike Williams of Summerside had 15 points and 22 rebounds in a winning effort as the Storm prevailed 120 to 105 over Quebec on Thursday. Meanwhile in Oshawa, Akeem Wright powered his way to 27 points on 11-15 shooting, including a perfect 2-for-2 from downtown, and 12 rebounds in a blowout of the Moncton Miracle.
